For twenty-three years I have immersed myself in research, commemorations, music, and countless journeys to Normandy. Thousands of hours of work, uncountable encounters, tears and memories. What began as an idea grew into a life’s work. Now I am closing this chapter. The website www.ww2history.eu (formerly www.backtonormandy.org) comes to an end – and what remains is this film: Music Inspired by D-Day. Music Inspired by D-Day tells, in one hour and twenty minutes, the story of the road to D-Day: the preparations, the crossing of the Channel, the bloody landings on the beaches, and at last the fall of the Nazi regime. The film begins with the everyday life of the Jewish community, set against the rise of Nazism. It briefly shows the mobilization in the Netherlands, then follows the military operations, the liberation of the camps, and closes with the final farewell: the last journey of WWII veterans to Normandy (The Last Pilgrimage). The images, the music, the editing – all were created by me. The historical footage is, of course, authentic. This is more than a film. It is a tribute, a testimony, and a part of myself. For me, every note I wrote and every image I edited carried the weight of remembrance. At times it felt like walking alongside those who never returned. De film begint bij het gewone leven van de Joodse gemeenschap, tegenover de opkomst van het nazisme. Ook de mobilisatie in Nederland komt kort voorbij. Daarna volgen de militaire operaties, de bevrijding van de kampen, en als slot het laatste afscheid: de laatste reis van WOII-veteranen naar Normandië (The Last Pilgrimage). Beelden, muziek en montage zijn volledig door mij gemaakt. Het is mijn eerbetoon – een levenswerk dat ik alleen kon volbrengen dankzij de steun en liefde van mijn vrouw.
